Description:
1876 Eagle, AU53, Mintage of 687 Coins
Underrated and Seldom Seem Finer, Ex: Richmond
1876 $10 AU53 NGC. Ex: Richmond Collection. The mintage of the Centennial eagle issue was surprisingly, puzzlingly low, 687 circulation strikes and 45 proofs; both formats are hotly contested at auction for those obvious reasons. The business-strike mintage makes the 1876 eagle the second-lowest-mintage gold issue of the year, behind the celebrated 1876 three dollar gold. The surfaces of this piece are brightly lustrous auburn-gold, showing no distractions and great eye appeal. The date is unknown in Mint State at NGC, although this piece is the Plate Coin at NGC Coin Explorer. PCGS claims one submission in MS60. Needless to say, with a survival of perhaps 40 or 50 pieces today, the issue is quite underrated. This offering marks a marvelous opportunity for astute bidding.
Ex: Richmond Collection, Part I (David Lawrence, 7/2004), lot 2104, which brought $13,225.
