Description:
1878-CC Liberty Eagle, AU50
Low-Mintage Branch Mint Key
1878-CC $10 AU50 NGC. Variety 1-A. One of the rarest issues of the series, the 1878-CC Liberty eagle claims a low mintage of just 3,244 pieces. As collecting large-denomination gold coins became popular only in the 1930s and collecting mintmarked issues was in disfavor until the 1890s, few examples of the 1878-CC were saved for numismatic purposes. Doug Winter estimates the surviving population at 45-55 examples in all grades, with most examples seen in the VF grade range.
This coin is a lightly circulated example with just a touch of wear on the well-detailed design elements. The still-lustrous orange-gold surfaces show a few minor abrasions, none large or distracting. This coin is a prize for the discerning collector of Western gold. Census: 6 in 50, 23 finer (11/12).(Registry values: N7079) (NGC ID# 265K, PCGS# 8681)
