Description:
Challenging Choice XF 1878-CC Eagle
1878-CC $10 XF45 PCGS. The 1878-CC has the second lowest mintage of any Carson City Eagle. The production of 3,244 pieces is actually less than that of the legendary 1870-CC Double Eagle. Despite its miniscule mintage, the 1878-CC was ignored by numismatists until the twentieth century, and only a few dozen survivors are known. This golden-brown example is a bit softly struck on the curls near the ear, but the stars and wings are crisp. A couple of moderate obverse marks are by no means conspicuous. Certified in a prior generation PCGS holder. Population: 7 in 45, 14 finer (4/05).(#8681) (Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 265K, PCGS# 8681)
