Description:
Condition Census 1883-CC Eagle, MS60
Extremely Rare in Mint State
1883-CC $10 MS60 NGC. The 1883-CC Liberty Head eagle had a tiny emission of only 12,000 coins, and today it is virtually unknown in Mint State. Besides the present piece, NGC has certified two other Mint State examples, with a single MS61 finer. PCGS has graded a single MS60 example as the finest and only Mint State specimen (8/09). Rusty Goe points out that most of the local gold that flowed into Carson City in this year went toward production of double eagles, not eagles, and estimates that only 2% of the original mintage survives--in any grade.
The appealing surfaces on this specimen are lustrous yellow-gold, with a good strike and fewer singular abrasions than might be expected for the grade. Both sides, but especially the reverse, are somewhat prooflike, also as expected from such a low production. As Goe adds, most of the "handful of Mint State pieces in existence" are in "strong hands." Expect the bidder cards to fly high on this piece. Census: 3 in 60, 1 finer (8/09).(Registry values: N4719) (NGC ID# 2667, PCGS# 8700)
