Key Choice XF 1842-C Small Date Five Dollars1842-C $5 Small Date XF45 PCGS. Variety 5-C. This is one of the key dates to the Half Eagle series, and a very difficult coin to find in high grades. The surfaces of this particular coin show moderate handling marks, but the strike had enough push to bring up the central devices, although the stars are a little weak at the centers and Liberty's lovelock is shallow. Of the Charlotte Mint issues, this is the rarest of the Half Eagles. The obverse die broke early with a piece falling out from the top of the obverse, forming a cud. Soon the die was replaced with the Large Date version of the 1842-C half eagle, and coinage continued. This coin shows no evidence of the break on the obverse. Identifiable by a small pit in the field below the first S of STATES and another similar pit above the second T of that same word. Population: 4 in 45, 12 finer (10/05).(#8208) (Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 25SV, PCGS# 8208)
