Extremely Scarce 1843-O Large Letters Half Eagle MS641843-O $5 Large Letters MS64 NGC. After several years without an appearance of a Mint State 1843-O Large Letters, we are now pleased to offer for the second consecutive sale an important MS64 example of this early New Orleans Half Eagle. Attribution of the '43-O Large Letters, the more available of the two letter variants of this issue, is characterized by the positioning of the mintmark over the VE of FIVE.
The strike on this beautifully preserved example is a trifle soft on Liberty's curls and on the feather detail of the eagle's neck, while the balance of the coin is boldly impressed. Bright green-gold surfaces are accented in pale orange patina, being especially vibrant and frosty. A wispy die crack connects the obverse border to the base of the portrait through the 1 of the date. The most obvious distraction is actually a Mint-caused anomaly, that being a series of horizontal roller marks that extend from the central devices out into the fields. A reeding mark above the eagle's head is the most noticeable post-minting disturbance. An unusual opportunity for quality conscious Southern gold collector. Population: 5 in 64, 1 finer (11/03). (#8216) (Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25T6, PCGS# 8216)
