Description

Select Mint State 1844-O Half Eagle
Recovered From the
S.S. New York

1844-O $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 5. Ex: S.S. New York. The shipwreck is the source of several high-grade examples of the 1844-O half eagle, including this Select representative. The luster is bright and swirling, a rich yellow with hints of apricot. On the obverse, the marks present are largely small with the exception of a luster graze to the right of the date. The reverse has more visible scrapes, most notably under the eagle's left (facing) wing. The strike is sharp both on the delicately frosted inner devices and the peripheral stars, completing the coin's rewarding appearance. Census: 10 in 63, 6 finer (1/13).
