Description:
Uncommonly Fine 1845-D Half Eagle
1845-D $5 AU58 NGC. Winter 10-H. This "common" D-mint half eagle is generally not located above the VF-XF grade level. Approximately 150-160 pieces are believed extant in all grades, with just a handful believed known today in near-Mint or actual Mint State condition. This piece is similar to the AU58 we sold in our 2001 Santa Clara Sale in that both coins display fullness of strike--quite an uncommon feature on Dahlonega coins of any date. Light chatter and evidence of slight handling is seen on each side, as one would expect for the grade, with the only mark of any note being a short nick on Liberty's upper lip. The fields are bright and semi-prooflike with an occasional dash of reddish patina. (NGC ID# 25TC, PCGS# 8224)
