Description:
Uncirculated 1847-C Five Dollar
High-Grade Charlotte Type Coin
1847-C $5 MS60 PCGS. Variety 1. Wonderfully original with medium natural color that deepens at the 8 in the date. The fields are a little ticky (hence the grade) but there are no marks that deserve special mention other than a small depression in the obverse field between stars 2 and 3. We have seen inferior examples of this date in holders marked MS61 and even MS62.
As one might expect from an issue with the highest mintage of any half eagle from this mint, the 1847-C is one of the most common Charlotte issues. But it is scarcer than generally believed in higher grades and very rare in Uncirculated. There are fewer than a dozen known in Uncirculated. The finest is a PCGS MS65 that is Ex: Pittman/Farouk/Col. Green. There are also at least three that grade MS63: the Dingler/Elrod coin, the Cinclair coin (Ex: Stack's 1/07, lot 5142) and the Milas coin. The first is graded by PCGS while the other two are graded by NGC.
