Description

1847-D Half Eagle, MS63
Ex: Ashland City, Fourth Finest Known

1847-D $5 MS63 PCGS. Variety 17-I. Ex: Ashland City. The 1847-D is one of the more available D-mint fives, as one might guess from the mintage of 64,405 pieces. Only 10-12 pieces are believed known in Mint State with this easily being one of the finest known. Doug Winter ranks the Ashland City 1847-D as fourth finest on his Condition Census. As with other high grade 1847-D fives we have seen, this piece shows beautifully toned surfaces that have a lovely mixture of golden-orange and bright lilac coloration. Sharply struck throughout, the coin shows no obvious abrasions on either side. Just a lovely coin and perfect for type purposes or a high grade date collection of D-mint fives. Population: 2 in 63, 0 finer (9/12).
Ex: Ashland City Collection / FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2003), lot 4762, where it realized $12,075; FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2005), lot 30458, where it brought $14,950.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25TP, PCGS# 8234)

Needless to say I was overwhelmed by the results of the auction and I truly believe it was Jill’s efforts in promoting and displaying the piece that brought in the extra value.
