Description:

1847-O Half Eagle, AU53
Rarest New Orleans Five
1847-O $5 AU53 NGC. From a tiny mintage of just 12,000 pieces, the 1847-O is the rarest half eagle from the New Orleans Mint, both in terms of absolute and high-grade rarity. Probably no more than 40-50 examples survive today in all grades and the issue is certainly rare at the AU53 level. Still, the elusive nature of the 1847-O is not widely recognized outside of series specialists.

The present coin displays well-detailed design elements with just a touch of wear on the high points. The bright greenish-gold surfaces show highlights of rose and traces of prooflike reflectivity cling to the devices. The surfaces are lightly abraded for the grade. Census: 5 in 53, 14 finer (8/13).(Registry values: P8) (NGC ID# 25TR, PCGS# 8235)
