Description:
One of the Finest Known 1848-D Half Eagles, MS63
1848-D $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 18-M. Die State I. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Although minted in sufficient numbers (47,465 pieces), the '48-D half eagle is scarcer overall than one might imagine and an extremely difficult issue in AU and better grades. Only a small handful exist at the Uncirculated level, of which this remarkable piece has been deemed the finest. The shimmering surfaces are boldly defined with no signs of die lapping, and the natural green-gold color contributes immeasurably to the overall eye appeal. Extensive die polish on the reverse is further evidence of this coin's early die state. Blemishes are both minimal and strategically placed, with only a few minor pinscratches in the fields and a small cluster of marks between stars 11 and 12. An exciting Dahlonega half eagle for the serious collector of Southern gold. Population: 2 in 63, 0 finer (11/03). (#8238) (Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25TU, PCGS# 8238)
