Description:
Scarce 1848-D Half Eagle, XF40
Above-Average Strike and Surfaces
Very Rare Variety
1848-D $5 XF40 PCGS. CAC Gold Label. Variety 21-N. This previously unlisted, and very rare, variety shows die lines connecting the eagle's right (facing) leg with the upper arrowhead and shaft. It also shows a crack from the R in AMERICA to the right (facing) wing. The 1848-D is scarce in any grade, and usually comes poorly struck and with severe abrasions. The present XF example is an important exception. The design elements, while showing high-point wear, exhibit nice detail, and both sides reveal just the expected number of marks associated with light circulation. Blushes of light green visit the orange-gold surfaces. Housed in a green label holder.
