1850-C Half Eagle (Sharp Mintmark), MS63
Condition Census Quality
1850-C $5 MS63 NGC. Variety 2. This nicely detailed example has centers that show more detail than usual. This is an early die state of this variety that was made before the reverse die crack; some clash marks can be seen on both sides. The obverse is bright yellow-gold; the reverse is very choice with slightly deeper green-gold color. The mark on Liberty's chin serves as an instant identifier, and there is a cluster of small marks on the obverse between stars 5 and 6. This is one of the finest known 1850-C half eagles.
The 1850-C is similar in high-grade rarity to the 1849-C half eagle. There are an estimated 10 to 15 pieces known in Uncirculated. The finest certified example is Ex: Milas, lot 479, and it has been graded MS64 multiple times, by both PCGS and NGC. There is an uncertified piece in the Charlotte Mint Museum that is extremely choice as well. In MS63, we believe that there are three or four distinct coins known, including the example in the Cherokee County Collection. There have been a total of seven auction appearances for MS63 1850-C half eagles since 2000 but this includes a number of coins that have reappeared. The last MS63 that Heritage auctioned was lot 3176 in the 2008 FUN Sale (graded by PCGS) that realized $17,250.

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
