Description:
Near-Gem 1853 Five Dollar, An Often Overlooked Condition Rarity
1853 $5 MS64 PCGS. This issue's respectable (for the era) original mintage of 305,770 pieces explains its general availability in lower grades. In AU and Mint State, however, the 1853 is an underrated rarity, and examples are more elusive than those of the 1843, 1847, 1852, and 1861 deliveries. This Condition Census near-Gem is beautifully tinted in golden-rose hues with full, softly frosted luster. With the exception of the central obverse highpoints, every feature is sharply defined, and there are no singularly distracting surface blemishes. NGC and PCGS combined have seen just three coins in MS64, with a lone MS65 NGC specimen certified finer (1/02). (NGC ID# 25UD, PCGS# 8253)
