Description:
1853-C Half Eagle, MS62
An Available Charlotte Type Coin
1853-C $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 1. The obverse of this well-struck example has fairly deep orange-gold and reddish color that helps to slightly mask a bit of roughness in the left field; the reverse is slightly lighter with more significant roughness in the fields as well as a few marks. A solid coin for the grade with good luster and nice overall eye appeal.
The 1853-C is one of the more available Charlotte half eagles in terms of its overall and high-grade rarity. There are more than 300 examples known with most showing considerable wear. As many as a dozen exist in Uncirculated, the finest being the Bass II, lot 1041 coin (which Heritage later sold as lot 3032 in our 2004 FUN auction) that has been graded MS64 by PCGS. There are another three or four coins graded MS63.
Ex: Cincinnati Signature (Heritage, 5/2009), lot 3778, where it sold for $11,500.
