Description:
1853-D Half Eagle, MS61
Popular Mintmark Type Issue, Rare in Mint State
1853-D $5 Large D MS61 NGC. Variety 29-V. From a mintage of 89,678 pieces, the 1853-D is the most available half eagle from the Dahlonega Mint. Doug Winter estimates a surviving population of 275-325 examples in all grades, with only 15-20 specimens in Mint State. There are four die varieties known for the date, with this coin representing the Variety 29-V, with the Large D mintmark located away from the feather and stem. Vibrant mint luster highlights the pleasing greenish-gold surfaces of this piece, and the strike is sharp in all areas. Census: 18 in 61, 12 finer (9/10).(Registry values: P1) (NGC ID# 25UF, PCGS# 8255)
