Second Finest Known 1854-D Half Eagle, A Fabulous MS65, Ex: Bass, Ashland City1854-D $5 Large D MS65 NGC. Ex: Ashland City. This spectacular coin that is now listed as the # 2 piece on Doug Winter's Condition Census, although it is technically tied with the Duke's Creek / Akers plate coin. As expected from the grade, the surfaces are nothing less than spectacular. Fully struck throughout, each side has bright yellow-gold coloration and semi-prooflike fields that are a result of being struck from striated dies. A couple of tiny contact marks are located in the lower left obverse field and will serve as useful pedigree identifiers. With a mintage of 56,143 pieces, the 1854-D is one of the more frequently encountered of all Dahlonega half eagles; however, surprisingly few are known today in Uncirculated grades, and this piece stands as one of the finest D-mint fives in the entire series.
