Description:
1855-D Medium D Half Eagle, Mint State Details
Challenging Variety, Seldom Seen Uncirculated
1855-D $5 Medium D -- Scratches -- NGC Details. Unc. Variety 38-FF (formerly 32-W). The Medium D mintmark has an upright centered over the space between VE in FIVE. The obverse of this piece shows a deep dig from star 8 to the rim and a longer, shallower scratch through Liberty's neck out into the left field. The surfaces otherwise are Uncirculated and appealing, with bright yellow-gold color and some brownish accents. The mintage of the 1855-D half eagle was 22,432 pieces, making it a scarce and underrated date, and the Medium D variety is seen less often than the Large D (variety 38-EE). Doug Winter writes that the 1855-D is the scarcest half eagle struck during the 1850s. The few Mint State survivors known of the 1855-D make this an important offering.
