Description

Pleasing AU55 1855-S Half Eagle

1855-S $5 AU55 NGC. After a token mintage of 268 half eagles in 1854, the San Francisco Mint took enough time from double eagle production in 1855 to mint 61,000 half eagles in 1855, making this the first relatively collectible coin from the western mint. Most such pieces went into circulation and stayed there. Consequently, Mint State pieces are very rare, and most collectors focus on better AU pieces such as the present coin, a pleasing piece with orange-gold highlights and a good deal of luster in the recesses. The surfaces have the volume of light abrasions expected from a lightly circulated gold coin, and light wear is visible on the high points.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25UU, PCGS# 8265)
