Mint State 1856-S Half Eagle

1856-S $5 MS61 NGC. Medium S. The First San Francisco Mint preferred to strike double eagles, which were essential to Western banking. Other gold denominations were struck but only in limited quantity. The 1856-S five is scarce in all grades and an underappreciated rarity in Mint State. The present sharply struck piece has peach-gold and steel-blue toning. Only delicately abraded for the MS61 grade. Census: 5 in 61, 1 finer (4/12).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25UZ, PCGS# 8270)
