Description:
1857-C Five, Bright, Semiprooflike MS62
Condition Census Quality
1857-C $5 MS62 PCGS Secure. CAC. Struck in bright yellow-gold with impressive semiprooflike luster and great overall visual appeal for the date and the grade. The strike is above-average for the issue with the only area that shows weakness noted on the eagle's neck. This coin is easily identified by the presence of a toning spot in Liberty's hair.
The 1857-C is one of the more available half eagles from this mint in higher grades, ranking 21st of 24 issues. There are around a dozen or so pieces known in Uncirculated with the finest being the NGC MS65 that is from the Elrod and Miller collections. Only one other coin, a PCGS MS63, that is Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2004), lot 3037, is finer than MS62. The Cherokee County Collection example is clearly in the Condition Census for the issue, and it is one of just two MS62s that have been approved by CAC with one finer also having received CAC approval. Ex: FUN Signature (Heritage, 1/2010), lot 2187, where it sold for $18,975.
From The Cherokee County Collection.(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25V3, PCGS# 8272)
