Finest PCGS-Certified 1859 Half Eagle1859 $5 MS62 PCGS. Ex: H.W. Bass Jr. Collection. Except for the 1850, the 1859 is scarcer than any other P-mint half eagle dated 1843-1859. Most known specimens are well worn, with VF or XF being typical. Mint State examples are rare; indeed PCGS and NGC have certified only 10 Uncirculated pieces to date. This specimen displays gorgeous cartwheel luster and lovely orange and yellow-gold color. The fields show some prooflike tendencies, and highlight sharply impressed motifs when the coin is tilted beneath a light source. Were it not for shallow scrapes in the left obverse field and a small abrasion beneath Liberty's chin, this MS62 specimen would approach Gem quality. Population: 1 in 62, 0 finer (4/06).(Registry values: P6) (NGC ID# 25VB, PCGS# 8280)
