Description

1859-C Half Eagle, MS61
Appealing Red-Gold Surfaces

1859-C $5 MS61 PCGS Secure. Variety 1. The only known dies for the issue. This is a textbook example of a complicated Charlotte date showing a typically sharp obverse impression that contrasts with the imprecise reverse strike for which the issue is famous. Researchers suggest that an imperfect reverse die was used to produce the 31,847 reported coins, as all share the same interesting strike characteristics. The present Mint State example shows colorful rose-red patina over deep reflective gold surfaces. PCGS shows two coins at this grade level with three finer, while NGC shows eight in MS61 with two finer (4/12).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 25VC, PCGS# 8281)
