Description

1860-C Half Eagle, MS62
Generous Luster, Minimal Abrasions

1860-C $5 MS62 NGC. Variety 1, the only dies. Small date logotype close to the rim, large C mintmark nearly touching the juncture of the stem and fletchings. The mintage of the 1860-C half eagle was 14,813 pieces, the lowest for any Charlotte half eagle since the 1846-C. The 1860-C half eagle is a difficult issue to grade; even though many examples including the present piece show full star radials, some of the central hair details on Liberty, and more so on the reverse, show "incomplete hubbing," as Doug Winter points out, leading to notably weak detail which, nonetheless, is not due to strike weakness. This example shows generous mint luster over golden-yellow surfaces with a modicum of small ticks on each side. The combined NGC and PCGS population data show nine submissions at the MS62 grade level, and five are finer (6/13).(Registry values: P4) (NGC ID# 25VG, PCGS# 8285)

The marketing was exceptional from the photos to the ads in Civil War Times and North South Trader for the cross over people!!! I have had many emails from my Civil War collecting fraternity that saw these and I saw them at the national show in Nashville/Franklin in early December.
