Description:
1862 Five Dollar, Bright Yellow-Gold MS60
One of Only Three Uncirculated Pieces Known
1862 $5 MS60 PCGS. The overall rarity as well as the condition rarity of the 1862 is neatly summed up in two sentences in Garrett-Guth:

"By 1862 the federal government was not longer paying out gold coins -- thus the dramatically lower mintage for half eagles. The production of half eagles drops from 688,084 coins at the Philadelphia Mint in 1861 to only 4,465 examples (including Proofs) in 1862."

Only three Uncirculated pieces have been certified by both services. This MS60 is only bettered by an MS61 at PCGS (3/13). The bright yellow-gold surfaces are still slightly reflective in the fields in spite of numerous small abrasions scattered over each side. The only singular mark of note is a diagonal abrasion next to star 11 on the obverse.(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25VP, PCGS# 8292)
