Description:
NGC 1862-S XF 40. This is one of the premier rarities in the half eagle series. Its mintage of 9,500 pieces does not begin to tell the tale of this date's rarity. Apparently what wasn't melted was heavily circulated, as XF coins are about as fine as one is ever likely to encounter. Only 2 AUs have been certified by the major services. This piece is certainly a pleasing specimen. The central striking details are just a bit soft on the reverse, elsewhere quite firmly brought up. Pleasing orange-gold color and showing only one mentionable abrasion: a thin, angling scratch on the cheek of Liberty (not nearly as obvious as it might sound, and only mentioned for the sake of those who trace pedigrees). Trends $12,000. (NGC ID# 25VR, PCGS# 8293)
