Rarely Offered 1864-S XF 40 Half Eagle1864-S XF 40. Only in our recently conducted Long Beach auction have we had the privilege of offering an example of this extremely scarce half eagle, that being a VG. Now, thanks to the Diocese of Buffalo consignment, we are able to offer another VG and two even higher graded specimens. Its mintage of 3,888 pieces is quite low, but does not begin to convey this issue's true rarity. One needs only to look at population data and see that PCGS has certified a paltry five pieces, a Fine, a VF, (2) XFs, and an AU, to appreciate its lack of availability. This coin is quite solid for the grade, well detailed, and accented in reddish-gold with few appreciable blemishes. It isn't often that an XF mid-19th-century gold coin from somewhere other than the South or Nevada could cause a stir when offered for sale, but this very pleasing '64-S five-dollar just might.
