Description:
Conditionally Rare 1865-S Half Eagle MS61
1865-S $5 MS61 NGC. This attractive gold coin has a lovely peach-gold and mint-green toning scheme, and the surfaces display pleasing satiny luster. The wispy marks and hairlines on each side of the piece are not a significant impediment to the eye appeal, as this scarce Mint State example retains a visually enticing appearance. The 1865-S, with just 27,612 pieces struck, is among the most conditionally challenging of all Liberty half eagles, with the clear majority of survivors grading XF or lower. In fact, Akers ranked the 1865-S second in the entire series according to condition rarity. This coin is tied as one of the five highest-graded at NGC; while PCGS has only certified a single example in Mint State. Census: 5 in 61, 0 finer (11/06).(Registry values: P7) (NGC ID# 25VX, PCGS# 8299)
