Description

1867 Liberty Half Eagle Rarity, Choice AU Preservation

1867 $5 AU55 NGC. One of only 6,920 Half Eagles delivered by the Philadelphia Mint in 1867, this coin is far finer than the typically offered VF or XF survivor. In fact, it is equal in certified grade to the specimen that sold as lot 6704 in our September 1999 sale of the Pennsylvania Five Dollar Collection (which was, incidentally, the last time we offered an example that graded as fine as AU55). This is a mostly bright example with orange-gold color and appreciable remnants of a prooflike finish. The overall definition is sharp, and abrasions, while expectantly numerous for a circulated gold coin from the 1860s, are mostly small in size with not too many singularly distracting blemishes included. (NGC ID# 25W3, PCGS# 8313)
