Description

1868 Liberty Half Eagle, MS61
Extreme Mint State Rarity

1868 $5 MS61 PCGS. The 1868 half eagle is an extremely important rarity in the Liberty half eagle series. The mintage was 5,700 coins, and few survive in Mint State. In fact, PCGS and NGC have each certified just two examples in Mint State, each service grading one MS61 and one MS62. This is the first ever auction appearance of a PCGS Mint State 1868 half eagle.

Myriad surface marks are evident on both sides of this impressive Mint State specimen, with reflective, prooflike fields and light cameo contrast. The surfaces are fully brilliant with satiny yellow luster. Population: 1 in 61, 1 finer (3/13).(Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25W5, PCGS# 8315)
