Description:
Lightly Circulated 1869 Half Eagle Rarity
1869 $5 AU 58 NGC. Despite light wear across the highpoints, this is a richly defined, modestly prooflike representation of this scarce P-mint issue with an original delivery of only 1,785 business strikes. While the typical extant 1869 half eagle is apt to grade either XF or AU, current population data confirms that this near-Mint specimen falls comfortably within the Condition Census for the issue. The fields display light scuffiness and the eagle's neck feathers are poorly delineated, although we note that these are the only distractions worthy of note on the otherwise pleasing, orange-gold surfaces. NGC and PCGS combined report only 3 examples in AU 58 with a lone MS 64 PCGS example finer (6/99).
From the Pennsylvania Five Dollar Collection. (NGC ID# 25W7, PCGS# 8317)
