Finest Known 1890 Half Eagle, MS68 NGC1890 $5 MS68 NGC. Phenomenal quality for this or any other issue in the Liberty Half Eagle series. The sheer eye appeal of this coin helps secure the lofty MS68 designation. Sharply defined in all areas, the fields are bright and shimmer with semi-prooflike reflectivity, as one might expect of an issue of just 4,240 business strikes. The surfaces are not completely free from post-striking marks, but are temptingly close and certainly none are obvious to the unaided eye. A dark russet toning spot is noted over the arrowheads on the reverse, this being stated for future identification purposes. To state that this coin is the finest known of the few pieces that are known is to state the obvious. It is likely that a wealthy collector acquired this piece directly from the Philadelphia Mint. But who really knows for sure? Perhaps someone noticed the low mintage at the time of issue, celebrated a 50th anniversary, or marked the arrival of a first-born child. For the entire With Motto type, including the more readily obtainable issues, only 10 other pieces have been so graded by NGC, while 4 are certified finer (4/05).(#8375) (Registry values: P3) (NGC ID# 25Y2, PCGS# 8375)
