Description:
1885 Liberty Nickel, MS66
Business-Strike Key Date
1885 5C MS66 PCGS. CAC. With the exception of the five-specimens-known 1913 Liberty nickel (also available in this Platinum Night, should a collector be so inclined), the 1885 is the key to its series in all grades, just edging out the 1912-S for the honor. While the 1885 has the greater mintage (1,472,700 business strikes), it also had nobody looking to save it at the time of release and so sustained greater attrition losses. This Premium Gem 1885 nickel offers strongly swirling luster with considerable flash as well, particularly on the reverse. Hints of blue and antique-gold visit otherwise nickel-white surfaces. Even more surprising than the preservation is the sharpness of strike, which extends to the infamous ear of corn at bottom left on the wreath. Population: 21 in 66 (1 in 66+), 2 finer (11/13).(Registry values: N2998) (NGC ID# 2773, PCGS# 3846)
