Description:

Choice 1840 Quarter Eagle
Important First-Year Type Coin
Among the Finest Certified
1840 $2 1/2 MS64 PCGS. CAC. The 1840 Liberty Head quarter eagle boasts a mintage of just 18,859 pieces, small in comparison to most denominations, but nominal in the context of the series. The year saw the first use of Gobrecht's Liberty Head design, and the date is prized by type collectors today, but few examples were saved by the general public at the time of issue. Examples in Choice Mint State condition are very rare, as reflected by the population data. Currently, PCGS has certified only two coins in MS64, with none finer, while NGC has graded seven examples at the Choice level, also with none finer (8/10).
The present coin is an attractive Choice example with strong visual appeal to complement the high technical grade. The lustrous fields are highlighted by flashes of orange-gold color and display areas of prooflike reflectivity. The 1840 is known for its weak central strike, and this piece does show some softness in Liberty's hair above the ear. The shield and eagle's feathers also show some incompleteness, but the peripheral devices are strongly impressed. A few shallow scratches in the obverse field, near star 2, prevent an even higher grade.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GA, PCGS# 7717)
