Description:
1840-C MS61 Quarter Eagle
Seldom Available in Uncirculated Grades
1840-C $2 1/2 MS61 PCGS Secure. Variety 1. A solid coin for the grade with light yellow-gold color that deepens to red from 1 to 3 o'clock on the obverse; some light toning on the reverse is mostly seen on the eagle's feathers. Lustrous and lightly marked with a few small abrasions that limit that grade but are not out of keeping with the MS61 grade assigned by PCGS. There is a mark between stars 4 and 5 and a small dig near the leaves opposite the NIT in UNITED which serve as immediate identifiers. This desirable coin is numismatically significant as the first of the long-lived Liberty Head design from this mint.
A total of 12,822 examples were struck, of which as many as 200-250 might exist today. The 1840-C is a little more available in higher grades than formerly believed but it remains rare in Mint State with fewer than 10 known. The finest that we are aware of is the PCGS MS63 that is ex: Elrod.
Ex: Quality Sales Corporation Auction (9/1973), lot 1032; Bass IV (Bowers and Merena, 11/2000), lot 133.
