Description

1840-D Quarter Eagle, AU55+
First D-Mint Liberty Quarter Eagle

1840-D $2 1/2 AU55+ NGC. CAC. Variety 1-A. Liberty quarter eagles were struck at the Dahlonega Mint for the first time in 1840, with a small mintage of 3,532 pieces. The coins circulated widely at the time of issue, and the survival rate for the 1840-D is quite low, especially in high grade. Probably no more than 60-80 specimens survive today in all grades, and the 1840-D is probably the rarest coin of the Dahlonega series in grades above AU50.
The present coin is an attractive high-end Choice AU specimen, with a better-than-average strike that shows just a touch of softness on the obverse stars and eagle's claws. The light green and rose-gold surfaces show a few traces of prooflike reflectivity in sheltered areas. Census: 6 in 55+, 6 finer (11/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GC, PCGS# 7719)
