Description:
Exceptional 1841-C Quarter Eagle, AU58
The Sole Example With a Designation
1841-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Variety 1 (previously Variety 2-B), the only variety for the year. NGC has bestowed the coveted "Star" designation, denoting exceptional eye appeal, on this conditionally rare quarter eagle from the Charlotte Mint. It is the only 1841-C quarter eagle to have received the "Star," as of (2/09). Upon viewing the coin it is easy to understand why, although AU examples generally do not merit such consideration. Well struck except for a few of the obverse star centrils, with minimal high point wear and some wispy hairlines on each side that may have precluded a Mint State grade. Lime-green over the fields and centers, with vivid copper-orange coloration near the borders. A mere seven examples have been certified in Uncirculated condition by NGC and PCGS combined, but this number is virtually certain to include resubmissions. Doug Winter suggests a total of four or five Mint State survivors, in the latest edition of his book on Charlotte gold coinage.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GE, PCGS# 7721)
