Description

1842 Quarter Eagle, MS60
Finest Certified by NGC

1842 $2 1/2 MS60 NGC. While the various Southern U.S. branch mints are known for small mintages, in 1842 it was Philadelphia that struck the fewest quarter eagles, just 2,823 circulation-finish pieces. (Just one year earlier was the famously elusive 1841 quarter eagle issue, the "Little Princess.") PCGS estimates "50 to 60 known" and has graded only one Mint State coin, an MS62; at NGC, this MS60 representative is the sole finest in the Census Report (11/13). Canary-gold fields offer full semiprooflike luster and the devices are well-defined for the time. Though both sides show numerous wispy abrasions and Liberty's cheek area has several abrasions, the coin retains considerable eye appeal.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GG, PCGS# 7723)
