Description:
Near-Mint 1842-C Two and a Half
Very Rare Any Finer
1842-C $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Variety 1. Lightly worn and lustrous with nice reddish-gold and orange colors, in similar configurations, on the obverse and reverse. There is a small, sharp dig below the bun in the right obverse field that quickly identifies the piece; there is also some deeper toning above and below the eagle's left (facing) wing. The rarity of this date is best expressed by the fact that this is the only quarter eagle in the Cherokee County Collection that is not Uncirculated (!).
The 1842-C is the fourth rarest Charlotte quarter eagle overall but it is the rarest in high grades. We know of just three or four in Uncirculated as well as another 12 to 16 in properly graded About Uncirculated. There were only 6,729 struck.
Ex: ANA Signature (Heritage 7/2009), lot 2343, where it brought $8,337.50, R.M. Phillips Limited Partnership Collection.
From The Cherokee County Collection.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GH, PCGS# 7724)
