1842-C $2 1/2 XF45 NGC....
Elusive 1842-C Quarter Eagle, XF451842-C $2 1/2 XF45 NGC. Variety 3-B, the only known dies. Quarter eagle production at the Charlotte Mint amounted to just 6,729 coins in 1842. As one might surmise from this figure, the '42-C is one of the rarest gold coins struck at this branch mint. It is actually the third rarest C-mint quarter eagle after the 1843-C Small Date and 1855-C, and it is the rarest in high grade (AU and finer). One of just 55-65 coins believed extant (per Winter), this is an obviously important representative with dominant green-gold color. The strike is typical of the date, but the wear is minimal and evenly distributed. The scattered abrasions include a moderate reeding mark in the obverse field behind the bun at the back of Liberty's head.(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GH, PCGS# 7724)
