Description

Pleasing 1842-D Quarter Eagle, AU53

1842-D $2 1/2 AU53 NGC. Variety 3-F. The bottoms of the 1 and 8 are sharply doubled on this early die state piece. The 1842-D is the last of the trio of low-mintage D-mint issues that start the Liberty Head quarter eagles. Only 4,643 coins were produced, a number that seems especially small when compared to the more than 36,000 pieces that would fall from the presses in 1843. It is estimated that fewer than 100 examples survive today in all grades. Winter ranks the issue fifth in rarity overall, tied with the 1841-D. In high grade--AU or better--however, he ranks the 1842-D as the second most difficult, tied with the 1856-D and behind only the 1840-D.
Both sides have light greenish-gold surfaces with central weakness evident. The surfaces are lightly abraded as usually seen, and the remaining luster is above average for the issue.

HA is a traditional auction house, they set up their auctions slightly different from typical domain auctions. This works well, it seems to be a good mix of old age (live bidding in a prestigious hotel) and new age (online bidding).
