Description

1842-D Quarter Eagle, AU58
Bright Yellow-Gold Surfaces

1842-D $2 1/2 AU58 NGC. Variety 3-F. The only known die pairing for this scarce issue, which shows repunching on the digits of the date. Bright luster bathes the major devices as well as the stars and legends. This lightly circulated Dahlonega quarter eagle is sharply struck save for the shield lines, and the only mentionable contact is an unobtrusive horizontal pinscratch concealed within the hair. A moderate-sized planchet flaw beneath the eagle's beak is of Mint origin. Just 4,643 pieces were struck of the issue, and few today exist in grades approaching Mint State. Census: 9 in 58, 5 finer (9/11).
Ex: Long Beach Signature (Heritage, 5/2009), lot 1515.
