1842-D $2 1/2
Highly Regarded AU 58 1842-D Quarter Eagle, Possible Finest Known1842-D AU 58 NGC. A remarkable '42-D with strong claims to being the finest known example of this rare and largely unappreciated Dahlonega quarter eagle. Just 4,643 pieces were struck from a single pair of dies and survival estimates are thought to be in the neighborhood of 60 to 65 coins, none in mint state. The surfaces are very well struck throughout and display a slight dimpling on the jaw of Liberty, not uncommon for this elusive issue. Virtually all of the original luster is intact and blushes of coppery color are seen here and there over each side. One of the most important D-mint gold offerings in this sale. Population: 1 in 58, none finer at either service (10/97). (NGC ID# 25GJ, PCGS# 7725)
