Description:
1843-C Large Date Quarter Eagle, MS60
Pleasing Example, Strongly Detailed Obverse
1843-C $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 MS60 NGC. Variety 1. The Large Date 1843-C quarter eagle is distinguished not only by the date size but also the presence of the Plain 4 in the date, whereas the much-rarer Small Date has a Crosslet 4. Researchers estimate that about 88% of the total mintage of the 1843-C quarter eagles were the Large Dates, but they are scarce in Uncirculated grade. This pleasing example shows strong detailing on the obverse, unusual for the variety. A shallow scrape appears on the cheek of Liberty, and on the reverse there is a diagonal abrasion in the field below AT in STATES. The yellow-gold centers are surrounded by deep reddish patina at the margins. Census: 2 in 60, 16 finer (9/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GN, PCGS# 7728)
