Description:
1843-O Quarter Eagle, MS62
Rare Large Date Variety
1843-O $2 1/2 Large Date, Plain 4 MS62 NGC. CAC. Variety 1. Two types of Liberty quarter eagles were struck at the New Orleans Mint in 1843, the Small Date and the Large Date. This coin represents the Large Date variety, which is much more difficult to locate than its Small Date counterpart. In fact, the Large Date 1843-O is the second-rarest New Orleans quarter eagle, with an estimated mintage of just 76,000 pieces. Most of this production was released into circulation and few were saved by collectors. Doug Winter estimates the surviving population at 75-85 examples in all grades, and Mint State coins are very rare.
The present coin is a well-detailed MS62 specimen, with just a touch of softness on Liberty's hair. The fields are prooflike, with moderate reflectivity, and only minor signs of contact. The surfaces are an attractive greenish-gold, with a few hints of rose. This coin represents an important opportunity for the Southern gold specialist. Census: 3 in 62, 3 finer (3/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GS, PCGS# 7732)
