Description:
1843-O Quarter Eagle, Small Date
Conditional Rarity Near-Gem
1843-O $2 1/2 Small Date, Crosslet 4 MS64 PCGS. Variety 2. High date, mintmark closer to branch than claws, lapped stars. The quarter eagles struck in New Orleans in 1843 were produced in an enormous amount for the time and denomination, more than 288,000 coins in two main types, Small Date (Crosslet 4) and Large Date (Plain 4). The 1843-O Small Date is far more abundant than the 1843-O Large Date, which is among the rarest O-mint Liberty quarter eagles. The 1843-O Small Date, however, is quite elusive in Mint State grades, particularly MS62 and higher. The present near-Gem corresponds to the lapped stars variety Winter mentions but the date is high rather than low, and the mintmark is repunched rather than strike-doubled; stars 6-10 become progressively weaker from lapping or die-polishing, with star 10 only partially showing one point. A series of small die lumps appears on Liberty's neck. This near-Gem offers thick mint frost over surfaces that are far better-preserved than normally seen for the issue. Pleasing orange-gold color and a decent strike complete the eye appeal. Population: 6 in 64, 0 finer (11/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 2874, PCGS# 7731)
