Description

Scarce 1844-C Quarter Eagle, XF45
Above-Average Strike and Surface Condition

1844-C $2 1/2 XF45 PCGS. CAC. One die pair is known from a sparse mintage of 11,622 pieces. Douglas Winter (2008) writes that "the 1844-C is among the worst struck quarter eagles from this mint." This Choice XF example does reveal the usual softness on the eagle's legs, but the stars on the left obverse border, usually "extremely flat," show some of the centrils, and individual strands in Liberty's hair are relatively strong, not indiscernible as typically seen. Moreover, its peach-gold surfaces are only lightly marked, not showing "a plethora of obtrusive nicks and scratches." CAC was right on for this coin. This is an excellent choice for the gold specialist. Population: 16 in 45, 45 finer (4/12).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25GU, PCGS# 7735)
