Description:
1846-C $2 1/2 VF20 PCGS. Variety 7-F. Even though it successfully reopened after the July 28, 1844 fire, the Charlotte Mint managed to strike only 4,808 quarter eagles in 1846. This coin exhibits a typically strong strike with a fair amount of detail remaining on the obverse and reverse design details. The deep honey-gold surfaces carry abrasions that befit a circulated specimen, but are free of major damage. Since the mint used rusted dies to coin this issue, regions of granularity are evident around the date, within the fraction, and in a few other selected locations.
