1846-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. CAC. ...
Extremely Rare 1846-D Quarter Eagle, AU551846-D $2 1/2 AU55 PCGS. CAC. Variety 8-L, and apparently the rarest of four different die combinations for the 1846-D quarter eagles. There is noticeable repunching in the date, although it is jumbled and nearly impossible to diagnose. Doug Winter writes: "An example of this variety was discovered in the Pittman collection and sold as Lot 1753 in May 1998. It appears to be very rare." This piece is far finer than the unplated Pittman coin that was described as "Fine to Very Fine. Harshly cleaned and heavily hairlined."
The present Choice AU piece may rank as one of the finest known of this rare variety. It is fully lustrous with light greenish-gold surfaces, above average design definition, and minimal surface marks. Population: 17 in 55, 17 finer (12/08).(Registry values: P2) (NGC ID# 25H3, PCGS# 7742)
